This was no easy thing, as it was very rare for Aussie bands to really incorporate the Aussie into their music, but if anyone was going to do it. The band adopted a glam rock sort of image, as filtered through the minds of some young Aussies, and Macainsh wrote songs about young Australian life at the time. So that's sort of the technical details about how Skyhooks came to be. the pieces of the puzzle were all in place and things were about to get really interesting.

This led Macainsh to get in contact with his old carpenter surfing buddy Graeme (Shirley) Strachan, named Shirley, due to his curly blonde hair, hence Shirley Temple. Two songs they played "Hey What's The Matter" and "Love On the Radio" actually appeared on the album highlights of Sunbury 1974.Īfter seeing the performance on the TV, Steve Hill phoned Macainsh and resigned. The band gained a cult following around the scene, and appeared at the Sunbury Music Festival in January 1974, and they were essentially booed off stage. Wilson, Gudinski and Mushroom are huge names in the Australian music industry. In August Bob (Bongo) Starkie (guitar and bvox) replaced his brother Peter (who went on to be in Jo Jo Zep and the Falcons) and Red Symons (guitar, vocals and keys) replaced Peter Inglis.īy late 1973 Ross Wilson had convinced Michael Gudinski to sign them to his booking agency and eventually his record label Mushrrom Records, (formed in 1972). With Peter Inglis on guitar, Peter Starkie on guitar and Steve Hill on vocals the band played their first gig at ST Jude's Church Hall in Carlton, 16th April 1973.Īt a later gig Ross Wilson, formerly of Daddy Cool, but now in the Mighty Kong, had Skyhooks as a support and Wilson liked the band and signed Macainsh to a publishing deal. The name came from a fictional company in 1956 sci-fi film Earth Vs The Flying Saucers. Skyhooks formed in March 1973 with Macainsh (bass and bvox) and Strauks (drums). Strachan took off to have a career in carpentry, and fun surfing on Phillip Island. As is often the case they went through name changes - Sound Pump in 68 - Macainsh formed Reuben Tice in 1969 with another vocalist - In 1970 Macainsh and Strauks got back together, with Strauks now playing the drums, first as Claptrap and then In Frame, in 1971, with Graeme (Shirley) Strachan on Vocals. Skyhooks started off as Spare Parts at Norwood High School in Melbourne, Australia in 1966 with Greg Macainsh on bass and Imants (Freddie) Strauks on lead vocals.
